Nicklaus stays in touch with game of golf

Jack Nicklaus had a golf club in his hand and a gallery around him, just like old times. He was checking up on his U.S. team at the Presidents Cup when he noticed Steve Stricker in a bunker at Royal Montreal, getting advice from assistant captain Jeff Sluman. It wasn't long before Nicklaus joined them. "First bunker shot I've hit since May," Nicklaus cracked. The last competitive shot he struck was two years ago at St. Andrews, when he holed a 15-foot birdie putt for a 72 in the British Open.

Duval returns to Tour after 7-month layoff

David Duval spent much of the time he set aside for putting practice Wednesday shaking hands and talking about his new baby. The Viking Classic will be his first PGA tournament since February after a seven-month break to be with his wife during a difficult pregnancy. A smiling, joking Duval said he isn't sure what to expect after playing once a week or less of "cart golf" during his layoff.

Mills earns spot on next year’s PGA Tour

Canadian Jon Mills won his second career Nationwide Tour title Sunday to lock up a spot next year on the PGA Tour, closing with a 7-under 64 in chilly conditions for a three-stroke victory over D.A. Points in the Boise Open. Mills finished with a 21-under 263 total on the Hillcrest Country Club course and earned $121,500 to jump from 24th to fifth on the money list with $282,283. The top 25 at the end of the season will earn 2008 PGA Tour cards. "It feels great.

American club pros cruising at home

Ryan Benzel won the final three holes to earn an unlikely halve Sunday, and American club pros remained unbeaten on home soil with a 13 1/2-12 1/2 victory over Great Britain & Ireland in the PGA Cup. Benzel appeared headed for a loss until taking the last three holes to earn a half-point against English pro Paul Wesselingh. That was enough to give the United States a victory on The Oconee Course at Reynolds Plantation.
