Snedeker’s dream round has him leading Buick

Thursday was supposed to be Tiger's day. Looks like someone forgot to tell Brandt Snedeker. The PGA Tour rookie flirted with a 59 on his way to an opening-round 61 at the Buick Inivitational. Woods lurks five shots back after a 66 that featured two eagles.

Goosen off to a good start

Retief Goosen took a one-stroke lead at the Qatar Masters after shooting a 7-under 65 Thursday in the first round. Miguel Angel Jimenez and Nick O'Hearn each shot 66 and were tied for second at the Doha Golf Club. "I think it was a fantastic 65 in difficult conditions," Goosen said. "But it is great to start with such a good score. Hopefully I can keep up the good work in the other three rounds.

Irwin breaks 15-month winless slump

Hale Irwin won the Champions Tour's season-opening MasterCard Championship on Sunday, beating Jim Thorpe and Tom Kite by five strokes for his tour-record 45th victory and first in 15 months. Coming off his first winless season in 12 years, the 61-year-old Irwin closed with a 7-under 65 for a 23-under 193 total to become the sixth-oldest player to win on the senior tour.

Hoffman overcomes wind, Rollins in playoff

Charley Hoffman rammed in a 4-foot birdie putt to beat John Rollins on the first hole of a playoff in the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic on Sunday, wrapping up a wind-swept round that took its toll on most of the players. It was Hoffman's first PGA Tour title.

Irwin shoots 62 to take lead at MasterCard

Hale Irwin shot a 10-under 62 and took a three-stroke lead over Tom Kite and Brad Bryant after the second round of the Champions Tour's season-opening MasterCard Championship on Saturday. The 61-year-old Irwin, coming off his first winless season in 12 years, had 10 birdies in his bogey-free round for a 16-under 128 total. He just missed shooting his age when a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 18 came up just short and to the right. Irwin hunched over, flipping his cap backward.

Paraguay wins Women’s World Cup by 7

Celeste Troche and Julieta Granada of Paraguay combined to shoot a 7-under 65 Sunday in betterball and easily win the Women's World Cup by seven strokes over the United States. Granada had five birdies at the Gary Player Country Club and Troche added three more - including a chip-in at the 17th - to win at 9-under 279. The United States team of Pat Hurst and Juli Inkster (67) finished second at 286. South Korea (67) was third at 287.
