FBR Open is all about fun…oh, and golf

As usual, Tiger Woods won't be at the FBR Open this week. As usual, it won't spoil the fun in Scottsdale. The tournament known for its rowdy, raucous crowds set attendance records last year. Many of those fans are busier drinking beer than watching golf, but that's what makes this event unique on the PGA Tour.

Two winning streaks not worth comparing

Byron Nelson won 11 straight tournaments over five months. Tiger Woods took almost that much time off between PGA Tour victories No. 6 and No. 7 in a winning streak that is increasingly difficult to compare to the one Nelson completed to set the current PGA Tour mark.

World Cup gains sponsor but loses out on WGC

The World Cup finally got a title sponsor on Monday, but the team event that has struggled to attract top players from every country will no longer be part of the World Golf Championships when it begins a 12-year deal in China. Omega has agreed to be the title sponsor of the event that dates to 1953 when it began as the Canada Cup. It will be held Nov. 22-25 on the Mission Hills Golf Club's Olazabal Course in Shenzhen.

Was there really any doubt? When all that stood between Tiger Woods and a seventh consecutive PGA Tour win was two strokes and a pair of PGA Tour rookies, it should hardly come as a surprise that Woods was able to rally for a win in his season debut at the Buick Invitational.

Funk finishes tourney without a bogey

Fred Funk had the most-lopsided victory ever in a 54-hole Champions Tour event, shooting his second straight 8-under 64 on Sunday for an 11-stroke win in the Turtle Bay Championship. The 50-year-old Funk, still a regular on the PGA Tour, ended the suspense early with six birdies in a front-nine 30 and finished with a tournament record 23-under 193 total in the tour's first full-field event of the year. Funk earned $240,000 for his second Champions Tour victory in five career starts.
