Standing on the balcony, the celebration in full swing, Ian Woosnam took a big swig of champagne. Way too big, in fact. It came spewing out of his mouth and bubbling through his nose.
That was, to be frank, the most adversity the winning Ryder Cup captain faced all week.

The last time Sergio Garcia was in the spotlight on a Sunday, he was dressed like a banana and getting trampled by Tiger Woods.
That was the British Open. This is the Ryder Cup.
Still 0-for-life in the majors, Garcia already has established himself, at age 26, as one of the best players in the history of golf's most important team competition.

The scoreboard switched from American red to European blue about as quickly as sunshine gave way to rain, a tug-of-war that never let up for 11 hours and produced the tightest opening-day matches in Ryder Cup history.
Little good that did the Americans.
They still couldn't seem to finish.

It should have been Padraig Harrington's day at the Ryder Cup. Golf's most famous team competition made its debut on Irish soil and Europe seemed pleased with its 5-3 lead over the Americans.
Most of the 45,000 spectators who flocked to the K Club just outside Dublin were there to cheer on their local star, and he beamed with joy at the reception when he walked onto the first tee.
