Tiger closes strong again, has big lead

Tiger Woods holed a 35-foot putt on the par-5 18th to make eagle for the third straight day on the closing hole at the American Express Championship to take a six-stroke lead into Sunday's final round. Woods finished 4 under on Saturday and sits at 19 under overall.

Nelson remembered as great gentleman

With story after story reinforcing the notion that Byron Nelson was an even better gentleman than he was a golfer, longtime business manager and close friend Jon Bradley provided the anecdote that perhaps best framed the essence of the late "Lord Byron." Bradley returned from a trip to the U.S. Golf Association's museum and recounted all the memorabilia from his friend's career that he'd seen.

Woods off to best start in six years

Stewart Cink suggested Thursday that the host course for the AmEx Championship change its name to Tiger Woods, considering how well it set up for him. And if Woods keeps it up, they just might do it. Tiger is five strokes clear of the field after shooting a 64 Friday at The Grove.

Mickelson calls it a season

Masters champion Phil Mickelson is done playing for the year, the PGA of America announced Thursday in saying that Mike Weir would replace him in the Grand Slam of Golf. Mickelson has shut it down after the PGA Championship the last two years, wanting to spend more time with his family. He did not enter the American Express Championship outside London this week, and a year ago skipped the season-ending Tour Championship.

Back on his own, Woods fires 63 at AmEx

Now that we've got that pesky little team event out of the way, Tiger Woods can get back to doing what he does best — obliterate the competition in stroke play. Woods fired an 8-under 63 Thursday to take the lead at the American Express Championship.

Keeping track of records can get muddled when Tiger Woods travels around the world, so there was a debate Wednesday whether his winning streak was dead or alive. The answer was both. "It ended two weeks ago," Woods said. After five straight victories from the British Open in July to the Deutsche Bank Championship outside Boston the first week of September, Woods lost in the first round of the World Match Play Championship at Wentworth. But that's a European Tour event.

Byron Nelson dies at 94

Byron Nelson, a five-time major champion and the holder of arguably one of the most unbreakable records in all of sports, died Tuesday at the age of 94. "Lord Byron" was perhaps best known for his run of 11 consecutive PGA Tour wins.
